Difference Between Oklahoma Prison and Federal Prison

What is the Difference Between Federal Prison and Oklahoma State Prison?

Prisons under Oklahoma's jurisdiction hold offenders convicted of state criminal charges and sentenced to incarceration by a state court. On the other hand, U.S. federal prisons are a place of confinement for individuals convicted of a federal crime and sentenced to a prison term by a federal court.

Unlike Oklahoma state crimes, federal crimes are usually non-violent and sometimes involve offenses committed across different states. However, federal prisons mostly hold inmates with longer incarceration sentences than state prisons because federal crimes have more severe consequences than Oklahoma state crimes.

While the Oklahoma Department of Corrections runs the state-owned prisons, the Federal Bureau of Prisons controls federal prisons.

Inmates serving time in a foreign country's prison can be transferred to a U.S federal prison under the Treaty Transfer Program. U.S federal prison inmates can also be moved to different facilities within the country. However, the transfer of inmates from an Oklahoma state prison must be to another state-owned prison facility.

The Oklahoma Prison System

The Oklahoma prison system refers to the incarceration facilities where convicted offenders are housed. These prison facilities accommodate offenders serving sentences longer than a year. In the state, the Department of Corrections is charged with managing the state-owned prisons. These institutions have a total housing capacity of 18,070 and currently accommodate over 15,000 inmates.

Oklahoma County Jails

County jails in Oklahoma house minor offenders that violate state or municipal laws. Typically, county jails accommodate convicted misdemeanants and defendants awaiting trial.

Local law enforcement agencies (sheriff departments) oversee the county jails' operation and management. They also maintain records generated from the jails and respond to requests for such records from members of the public. Querying parties can mail written requests to the department or request in person. The Oklahoma Sheriff's Directory provides the address of the current sheriffs and their departmental websites.

Usually, most county jails have inmate information available on online platforms that querying parties can access. For instance, Tulsa County provides an Inmate Information Center to look up inmates using their names. Pontotoc County's Daily Inmate List provides information on persons incarcerated in the county jail.

How Does the Federal Prison System Work?

Federal prisons are located nationwide and provide confinement for persons that commit offenses under federal jurisdiction. The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) oversees the operation of the 122 federal prison institutions in the United States. These institutions house about 152,174 inmates.

To obtain information on federal inmates, querying parties can use the BOP's Inmate Locator and search by the inmate details (name, age) or BOP number. Querying parties can also look up federal prison facilities with the Facility Locator.
